🎀☁️ Young Meteorologists in Year 2 🌦️🏑

Today, Sparrows Class continued their Geography learning about Harrogate by exploring the local weather and discovering how weather forecasts help us understand and prepare for the world around us. The children carefully examined a weather forecast and discussed the different types of information it provides, including temperature, rainfall, wind speed and cloud cover. They then used what they had learned to create their own weather reports before confidently presenting them to the class.
This lesson provided a wonderful opportunity to develop both geographical knowledge and oracy skills. Through discussion, questioning and presenting their reports, the children practised speaking clearly, using new vocabulary and communicating information to an audience. Strong oracy skills are a vital foundation for learning across the curriculum, helping children to think deeply, explain their ideas and grow in confidence.
Mrs Patefield was delighted with the children’s efforts and commented:
“The children impressed me with their confidence and enthusiasm today. They used geographical vocabulary brilliantly and spoke clearly and thoughtfully when presenting their weather reports.” We are all hoping the weather stays dry for the bonfire celebrations tomorrow evening, although it might be a good idea to bring a coat just in case! πŸŒ¦οΈπŸŽ†
Ideas to continue the learning at home:
  • Check the weather forecast together and discuss what the symbols and temperatures mean.
  • Ask your child to present a weather report for your family using their best presenter voice.
  • Keep a simple weather diary over the weekend, recording whether it is sunny, cloudy, rainy or windy.
  • Talk about how the weather affects everyday activities, clothing choices and travel.
By exploring their local area and sharing their learning with confidence, the children truly lived out our vision to Love, Learn, Shine. ✨
