Year 5 & 6 – Ravens

The teachers in Ravens are Miss Potter and Mrs Kendell

Welcome to Ravens’ class!

In Ravens’ class we are always shining and sharing our shine throughout the school day. As we are some of the eldest children in the school, we take this as an opportunity to be excellent role models to the younger children. Learning in Ravens’ class is always fun, with lots of opportunities to practise and build our confidence and independence. We take pride in everything we do and love the opportunities we have to take on extra responsibilities and roles within the class and wider school.

Recommended Reading

In Year 5 and 6 the children are encouraged to read increasingly challenging texts which are sometimes difficult to choose! To help, we have come up with a list of appropriate texts that we recommend, a lot of which can be found in our school library.

Children also take part in a range of short, focused Maths activities throughout the week. These help to develop fluency, improve recall of key knowledge, build confidence with calculation, and ensure important mathematical skills are regularly revisited:
Fluent in Five 1. DAILY Fluent in 5 8.45-9am
During registration every morning, children will complete ‘Fluent in Five’. Fluent in Five is a short daily maths practice that helps children build fluency and confidence with key number skills. Through five minutes of regular retrieval and calculation practice, children strengthen their understanding of maths facts and methods, helping them become quicker and more accurate mathematicians.
Rapid Reasoning
Rapid Retrieval is a short daily activity that helps children recall and apply key knowledge from previous learning. Regular retrieval practice strengthens memory, deepens understanding, and helps children make connections across different areas of the curriculum.
Arithmetic Test
Our weekly Arithmetic Test is a further opportunity for children to practise and apply key calculation skills. These short assessments help build fluency, identify areas for further support, and ensure children develop confidence and accuracy in mathematics.
