πŸ”€ Letters from Nature: Creative Typography in Year 5/6

Year 5/6 have been exploring typography in art and design through a hands-on and creative project using natural materials. Heron’s Class ventured outdoors to collect sticks and other natural resources before carefully arranging them to form both upper and lower-case letters.
The children then transferred their creations into their sketchbooks, taking great care to observe and record the shape, texture and detail of each letter. They practised a range of artistic techniques, including shading and mark-making, bringing their natural typography to life on the page. The results have been truly impressive, showcasing both creativity and attention to detail.
y said, “I have been so impressed with the children’s creativity and perseverance. They have carefully explored how letters can be formed in different ways and have produced some beautiful observational drawings. It has been wonderful to see them combining art, design and the natural world so successfully.”
This exciting project has encouraged the children to look at letterforms in new and imaginative ways, and they are looking forward to experimenting with even more creative lettering techniques over the coming weeks.

🏑 Follow-Up Ideas for Home

Why not continue the learning at home by:
  • Creating your own letters using leaves, pebbles, twigs or other natural materials in the garden.
  • Looking for interesting fonts and lettering on signs, book covers or packaging and discussing what makes them stand out.
  • Practising sketching favourite letters using different shading techniques.
  • Designing your name using creative patterns, colours or themed illustrations.
  • Creating an alphabet photo challenge by spotting and photographing letter shapes in everyday objects.
Through activities like this, our children continue to Love, Learn and Shine, developing creativity, curiosity and confidence while exploring the world around them. ✨
