From Talk to Text: Year 5 and 6 Writers Shine
There has been a real buzz about writing across Year 5 and 6 this term as children have immersed themselves in a range of exciting literacy opportunities. Drawing inspiration from remarkable athletes such as Simone Biles and Jesse Owens, children have explored biographical writing, diary entries and narrative techniques, producing pieces that demonstrate creativity, ambition and growing confidence as writers.
The work on display showcases children’s ability to write for different purposes and audiences.
From engaging social media-style biographies that celebrate the achievements of sporting icons to powerful diary entries written from the perspective of elite athletes, children have developed their ability to capture thoughts, feelings and events through carefully chosen vocabulary and imaginative ideas.
A key strength evident throughout Year 5 and 6 writing is the use of oral rehearsal before writing. Children are encouraged to discuss ideas, practise sentences aloud and explore vocabulary choices with their peers before beginning their drafts. This approach helps children organise their thinking, develop richer language and write with greater confidence.
Editing partnerships also play an important role in the writing process. Children work collaboratively to review each other’s work, offer constructive feedback and make improvements before completing their final pieces. This not only strengthens writing outcomes but also encourages children to become reflective and supportive learners.
Mrs Henderson, English Lead, said:
“One of the most powerful aspects of our writing curriculum is the emphasis on oral rehearsal before children begin drafting. By talking through ideas, vocabulary and sentence choices first, children develop confidence as writers and produce work that is more purposeful, detailed and engaging. Editing partnerships are equally valuable, encouraging children to reflect on their writing, give constructive feedback and work collaboratively to improve their final pieces.”
One Year 5/6 child said:
“Talking helps me organise my ideas before I start writing because I can hear whether my sentences make sense and sound effective. Working with an editing partner helps me improve my vocabulary, spot mistakes and make my writing the best it can be.”
The high-quality writing produced across Year 5 and 6 is a testament to the hard work, enthusiasm and determination shown by all of the children. Through discussion, collaboration and careful reflection, children are developing the skills needed to become confident communicators and successful writers.
This learning reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine. Children show Love by supporting one another through discussion and feedback, Learn by developing and refining their writing skills and Shine through the exceptional quality of writing they produce.
Well done to all of our Year 5 and 6 children for their fantastic achievements and commitment to becoming outstanding writers! βπβοΈ
