The children in Kingfishers have been super mathematicians this week! In our maths lesson, they were learning about which numerals represent which numbers and exploring lots of different ways to show a chosen number.
Working brilliantly with their partners, the children selected a numeral and then searched for as many representations of that number as they could. They used counting objects, pictures, fingers and number patterns to deepen their understanding. It was wonderful to hear so much mathematical language, counting and reasoning taking place throughout the lesson as the children shared their ideas and learned from one another.
Mrs Pywell said,“I was so impressed with the children’s enthusiasm and teamwork. They showed great confidence in recognising numerals and finding different ways to represent numbers. The mathematical discussions between partners were fantastic and really demonstrated their growing understanding.”

Try these maths activities at home:
🔢 Go on a number hunt around your home or on a walk. How many numerals can you spot?
🧸 Choose a number and find different ways to represent it using toys, coins, pebbles or household objects.
✋ Use fingers to show a number in different ways. For example, can you make 5 using two hands in more than one way?
🎲 Roll a dice and count out the matching number of objects. Can your child recognise the numeral without counting the dots first?
📚 Read number stories together and look for numerals and quantities in books.
