✨ Young Mathematicians Thinking Like Algebra Experts!
This week in Year 5 and 6, children have been exploring equations in exciting and practical ways. Using bar models and Cuisenaire rods, they have been learning how different values can be represented visually, helping them to deepen their understanding of number relationships and mathematical reasoning.
The children experimented with different combinations to make the same value and began recording their findings using mathematical expressions. This introduced them to some of the early ideas behind algebra, encouraging them to spot patterns, solve problems and explain their thinking with confidence.
Mrs Henderson, Year 5 & 6 Leader, said:
“It has been wonderful to see the children exploring mathematics so confidently this week. Using practical resources such as Cuisenaire rods and bar models helps children visualise complex ideas and develop a deeper understanding of how numbers and equations work. The enthusiasm and mathematical discussions in class have been fantastic.”

Follow-Up Learning at Home
Why not continue the learning at home by trying some of these activities together?
🏠 Challenge your child to find different ways to make the same total using addition, subtraction, multiplication or division.
🔢 Use household objects such as Lego bricks, coins or counters to create simple bar models and represent number problems visually.
🧩 Ask your child to explain how they know two different calculations have the same answer.
✏️ Create simple “mystery number” equations, such as □ + 8 = 20, and work together to find the missing value.
💬 Encourage your child to talk through their mathematical thinking and reasoning, just as they do in class.
