This week, the children in Sparrows Year 2 began an exciting new History topic: How has our school building changed over time?
The classroom was filled with excitement as the children discovered an old case packed with evidence and clues about the history of our school. Like real historians, they learned that evidence helps us find out about the past and began investigating a range of photographs and artefacts.
Working together, the children carefully examined each item, asking thoughtful questions and making predictions about what they had found. Through their investigations, they discovered that our school building was built in 1883 and was originally a hospital with 20 beds.
The children also compared historical photographs with the school building we know today, spotting several features that have remained the same over time. They thoroughly enjoyed becoming history detectives, using clues to uncover fascinating facts about our school’s rich history.
Through discussion, teamwork and enquiry, the children developed important historical skills by investigating, questioning and interpreting evidence. It was wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored the story of the building that is such an important part of our community today.
This learning experience reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine as the children loved discovering new information, learned how historians investigate the past, and shone through their teamwork, curiosity and thoughtful questioning.
