This week, the children in Wrens Class were excited to meet Numberblock 1 as they began their early mathematics journey. Inspired by their new numerical friend, the children explored art provision throughout the classroom, creating fantastic pictures of Numberblock 1 using a range of media including paint, pencils, collage materials and construction resources.
The children showed great creativity and enthusiasm as they represented Numberblock 1 in different ways, developing both their fine motor skills and their understanding of number through play and exploration.
Mrs Renton, Class Teacher, said:
“It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged in their first mathematics learning experiences. Numberblock 1 has captured their imagination and inspired some fantastic artwork. The children are already beginning to notice numbers in the world around them and are developing confidence with early mathematical concepts through their play.”
Our use of Numberblocks supports the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) Mastering Number programme, which was developed by Debbie Morgan, NCETM’s Director for Primary Mathematics. The programme aims to help children develop a deep understanding of number from the very start of their school journey, ensuring strong foundations for future mathematical success.
In Early Years at St Peter’s, we embrace a Mastery Maths approach from the outset. Through practical experiences, mathematical talk, songs, stories and engaging resources such as Numberblocks, children develop a secure understanding of number, patterns and relationships. Rather than rushing ahead, children are encouraged to explore concepts in depth, building confidence and fluency through meaningful experiences.
This learning beautifully reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine. The children showed a love of learning as they explored Numberblock 1, developed new mathematical understanding through hands-on experiences, and shone through their creativity and enthusiasm.
