A Bear in the City: Year 1 Kingfishers Bring Stories to Life! ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ“š

Year 1 Kingfishers have been thoroughly enjoying their literacy learning through the wonderfully funny and imaginative book by awardโ€‘winning artist and animator Leigh Hodgkinson. This clever twist on the familiar tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears sparked curiosity, laughter and, most importantly, some truly fantastic writing from the children.
In the story, many years after the original tale, Little Bear ventures into the big city where a grown-up Goldilocks now lives. The children loved exploring how the story changes when the setting moves from a quiet woodland to a bustling city. This inspired them to think deeply about sounds, sights and feelings in different environments.

๐ŸŽถ Amazing Sound Poems

The children were particularly excited to write their own sound poems, describing the noises of the busy city. From roaring traffic to chattering crowds, their work was full of creativity and imagination. They experimented with descriptive language and onomatopoeia, bringing the city to life for their readers.

โœ๏ธ Creative Story Retelling

Building on the book, the children also had a go at rewriting parts of the story, imagining what might happen next or how Goldilocks might respond to the unexpected visitor! It was wonderful to see their confidence growing as they used their ideas to extend the narrative.
Mrs Henderson was incredibly proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by the class:
โ€œThe children have worked so hard to bring their ideas to life. Their sound poems were full of energy and imagination, and their story writing showed such fantastic creativity. It has been a joy to see them so engaged in their learning.โ€

๐Ÿก How You Can Support at Home

You can help your child continue their learning journey at home by:
  • Listening for sounds on walks and encouraging your child to describe them in fun and creative ways
  • Reading together and discussing how stories might change in different settings
  • Encouraging your child to retell familiar stories with their own twist
  • Helping them write simple sentences about what they can hear, see and feel
At St Peterโ€™s, we are so proud of how our children Love, Learn and Shine through their creativity and enthusiasm. Year 1 Kingfishers have truly demonstrated this through their fantastic writing and imaginative thinking โ€“ well done, everyone! ๐ŸŒŸ
