🌊 Exploring Rivers from Source to Sea!

River Journey Workshop

On Thursday this week, we were delighted to welcome the team from the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust to St Peter’s to begin working with Year 3 Owls on The Journey of a River workshop.
At St Peter’s, we truly value the importance of engaging children in local fieldwork and helping them explore the world around them. Through the Rivers2U Project, children were given a fantastic opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences, deepening their understanding of rivers in a meaningful and memorable way.
Using the impressive Rivers2U mobile classroom, children took part in a range of practical activities including:
  • A rivers table, helping children understand how rivers flow from source to sea
  • Microscope investigations, where children observed and identified minibeasts and river flies
  • Interactive displays exploring river habitats and wildlife
The excitement and curiosity from the children were wonderful to see, with many asking thoughtful questions and making links to their learning in geography and science.

Miss Wilson shared, “It was wonderful to see children so engaged, asking thoughtful questions and making real-world connections.”

One Year 3 child said, “I loved finding tiny creatures in the water—it made me feel like a real scientist!”

This experience perfectly reflects our school vision to Love, Learn, Shine. Children showed a love of learning through their enthusiasm, developed their knowledge through enquiry, and truly shone as young geographers and scientists.

💬 Talk about learning at home

You might like to ask your child:
  • What did you discover about river wildlife?
  • How do rivers change from source to sea?
  • Why are minibeasts important for river health?
  • What surprised you most during the workshop?
