This afternoon in Sparrows (Year 2), the children took part in a wonderful learning experience that combined art, perseverance and positive thinking.
The focus of the session was on building resilience and perseverance, helping the children to understand the importance of using positive language and developing a growth mindset in everything they do.
As a class, the children revisited one of their favourite books, Odd Dog Out, paying close attention to the expressive and playful illustrations. Inspired by illustrator Rob Biddulph, the children followed one of his popular step‑by‑step “Draw with Rob” videos, recreating artwork in a similar style. They listened carefully, took their time and followed each step thoughtfully, showing excellent concentration and effort throughout.
Before picking up their pencils, the class discussed the importance of encouraging themselves when learning feels challenging. Together, they generated positive phrases such as “Don’t stop trying” and “I can do it.” The children were reminded that drawings do not need to be perfect and that their individuality is what makes their work special.
Miss Corrigan was incredibly proud of the children’s attitudes and reflected on the session, saying:
“I was incredibly proud of the perseverance shown by everyone, as well as the kind and supportive language the children used towards themselves and each other. They demonstrated a fantastic attitude to learning and really embraced the challenge.”
The classroom atmosphere was full of encouragement, kindness and determination, with children supporting one another and celebrating effort as much as outcome. It was a lovely example of how positive mindsets help children to thrive.
