🌟 Love, Learn, Shine Online: Our June Safety Focus for Families

At St Peter’s CE Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of our children is always at the heart of what we do. As part of our commitment to helping every child love, learn and shine, we regularly share guidance with families to support children in staying safe online at home as well as at school.
Our June Online Safety focus highlights some important areas for parents and carers to be aware of, particularly as children spend more time online using games, apps and social media platforms.

🚨 Online Scams – What Children Might Encounter

Scammers are increasingly targeting children through online games, messaging apps and social media. These scams often look genuine and can be difficult for children to recognise. Examples include:
  • Offers of free in‑game currency
  • People pretending to be friends and later asking for money or personal details
  • Phishing links designed to steal information or install malware
How you can help at home:
  • Talk regularly with your child about what they are doing online
  • Remind children never to share passwords or verification codes
  • Encourage children to speak to a trusted adult if something feels wrong
  • Help children check links carefully before clicking
  • Reassure your child that if they make a mistake, they should tell you straight away
These open conversations help children feel confident, supported and safe.

πŸ“± Apps, Images and Messaging – Staying in Control

Some messaging apps automatically save images and videos to a device’s camera roll. This means children may end up with content saved that they didn’t ask for or don’t fully understand.
We recommend:
  • Turning off automatic image downloads in app settings
  • Talking to your child about group chats and unexpected content
  • Helping children understand how to block and report users
Taking a few minutes to check settings together can make a big difference.

🧠 Digital Footprints – Thinking About the Future

Every time we go online, we leave a digital footprint. Children may not always realise that what they post, like or share can last for a long time.
Talking with children about:
  • What is safe to share
  • How images and comments can be copied or reshared
  • Being kind and respectful online
supports them to make positive choices now and in the future.

❀️ Our Shared Commitment

By working together, school and home can help children grow into confident, thoughtful and safe digital citizens. Thank you for your continued support in helping our children love learning, stay safe and shine brightly in everything they do – online and offline.
