🌟 Respect in Action: Helping Children Love, Learn and Shine

May

Our Worship Focus This Term: Respect

This half term, our whole school worship theme has been Respect β€” exploring what it means to value ourselves, others and the world around us. Through Bible stories, reflection, discussion and prayer, children have been encouraged to grow strong roots of respect so that their lives can show good fruit in the way they treat others.
At the heart of our worship has been Jesus’ teaching known as The Golden Rule:
β€œDo to others as you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7:12)
This message connects deeply with our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine β€” helping children understand that respect is not just something we talk about, but something we live out every day.

What Will Children Been Learning About Respect?

Across the term, worship has explored respect in rich and meaningful ways, helping children reflect on their own choices and attitudes. They have learned that respect means:
  • Listening carefully to others
  • Valuing everyone, recognising that each person is unique
  • Showing appreciation and kindness
  • Caring for our environment and property
  • Expressing opinions sensitively, even when we disagree
  • Praying for others, including friends, family, leaders and those in need
Children have also explored Bible stories such as The Roman Centurion, learning how respect crosses boundaries and how Jesus valued faith, humility and care for others, even when people were very different from one another.
Another important focus has been respecting special places, helping children understand why churches and places of worship are treated with care, reverence and quiet reflection.

How You Can Support and Talk About Respect at Home Over Half Term

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping children grow these values beyond school. Here are some simple, meaningful ways you can continue the conversation at home:

πŸ’¬ Talk Together

  • Ask your child: β€œWhat does respect look like at home?” or β€œHow can we show respect when we disagree?”
  • Share examples of people you respect and why.

🏑 Model the Golden Rule

  • Let children see you listening, apologising, forgiving and showing kindness β€” these everyday moments teach powerful lessons.

🌍 Respect in Action

  • Encourage children to care for their belongings, shared spaces and the environment.
  • Notice and praise respectful behaviour: β€œI liked how you listened carefully just then.”

πŸ™ A Simple Prayer Idea

You might like to end the day with a short prayer together:
β€œThank you, God, for the people in our lives. Help us to treat others as we would like to be treated. Amen.”

πŸ“– Reflect Together

  • When reading stories or watching programmes, ask: β€œWere the characters respectful? What could they have done differently?”

Growing Together

By working together as school and home, we help children grow deep roots of respect that will bear fruit in their relationships, choices and understanding of the world.
Thank you for continuing to support our worship journey and for helping your children to Love, Learn and Shine β€” not just in school, but every day.
