Roman History Brought to Life by Murton Park
Children in Year 4 and Year 5 were transported back nearly 2,000 years this week as they took part in an exciting Roman history workshop led by Simpson from Murton Park.
With a sharp focus on the life of a Roman soldier and the Roman invasion of Britain, the workshop helped children deepen their understanding of how and why the Romans came to Britain, and the lasting impact they had on everyday life.
Simpson brought with him an amazing array of Roman artefacts, including replica armour, weapons and everyday objects, which immediately captured the children’s imagination. Being able to see and handle these items helped bring history to life in a powerful and memorable way.
As a real expert in his field, Simpson shared his knowledge with enthusiasm and clarity, supporting children to develop a deeper understanding of the past. The session encouraged curiosity, discussion and critical thinking, and the children responded brilliantly.
The children asked lots of thoughtful and insightful questions, showing how engaged they were and how confidently they are beginning to think like historians.
Miss Emsley, History Leader, said:
“This workshop was a fantastic opportunity for children to deepen their understanding of the Romans in a meaningful and memorable way. Seeing real artefacts and hearing from an expert helped the children make strong connections with their learning, and their questions showed just how engaged and curious they were.”
Experiences like this reflect our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine — nurturing curiosity, deepening learning and helping every child shine through rich, hands‑on experiences.
đź’¬ Questions you could ask your child at home
To keep the learning going, you might like to ask:
- Why did the Romans want to invade Britain?
- What was daily life like for a Roman soldier?
- Which artefact did you find most interesting, and why?
- How did the Romans change life in Britain?
- What surprised you most about the Romans?
