🚀 No Limits to Learning: Year 2 Celebrates Ambition and Equality – Year 2 Sparrows Challenge Job Stereotypes!

This week, Year 2 Sparrows have been diving into an important theme: job stereotypes the old-fashioned idea that some jobs are only for men or only for women.
As part of our commitment to helping every child Love, Learn and Shine, the class explored how these stereotypes once shaped career choices, and how incredible people have challenged them.
The children learned about inspiring figures including:
  • Lucy Bronze, an award-winning footballer
  • Carlos Acosta, world‑renowned ballet dancer
  • Sue Batten, celebrated firefighter
  • Mae Jemison, NASA astronaut and doctor
Each child then chose one role model to write about, focusing on what they are famous for and how they succeeded in fields where they once might not have been welcomed.
Their writing showed curiosity, pride, and an understanding of the key message we want all our children to carry through life:
Anyone can do any job your gender should never set the limits on your dreams.

🌟 What the Children Said

Here are some lovely reflections from the children:
  • “Carlos Acosta didn’t listen when people said boys shouldn’t dance. He just kept trying!” – Year 2 child
  • “Lucy Bronze shows girls can be strong and sporty and brilliant at football!” – Year 2 child
  • “Mae Jemison is amazing because she didn’t stop learning. She said yes to every challenge.” – Year 2 child
  • “Sue Batten was brave. She wanted to help people, so she became a firefighter even when others told her she couldn’t.” – Year 2 child
Miss Corrigan was delighted with the children’s thoughtful discussions:
“I am so proud of the Sparrows. They showed such maturity when talking about fairness and ambition. They recognised that everyone should have the chance to shine, and they celebrated how these inspirational people followed their dreams with confidence and courage.”

🏠 Follow‑Up Ideas for Home

To help children keep thinking deeply about equality, fairness and ambition, here are some simple ways families can continue the conversation:

Questions to spark discussion

  • “What job would you love to do one day, and why?”
  • “Has anyone ever told you that you couldn’t do something? How did it make you feel?”
  • “What makes someone inspirational?”
  • “Do you think some jobs are still seen as ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’? Why might that need to change?”

Activities to explore together

  • Look up another inspirational role model who challenged expectations.
  • Watch a child‑friendly biography video and discuss what helped that person succeed.
  • Create a “future me” drawing showing any job they dream of.
  • Share stories from family members about jobs they have done that broke stereotypes.
