🎥 KS1 Children Enjoy Big-Screen Treat at the Odeon Harrogate

Our Key Stage One children enjoyed a very special outing this week as they headed to the Odeon Harrogate to watch Pets on a Train. We feel incredibly lucky to have such a fantastic cinema right on our doorstep, allowing all children to access this enriching experience completely free of charge.
The excitement was palpable as the children settled into their seats, ready to see storytelling come to life on the big screen. This trip links beautifully with our English work on story structure, character development and speaking and listening. It gave every child the chance to experience a shared narrative they can now explore back at school.
As part of our Love • Learn • Shine vision, experiences like this help our children grow in confidence, curiosity and creativity—while also building memories with their friends.
đź’¬ What the Children Said
Here are a few snippets of joy from the day:
- “I loved the funny dog! He made me laugh so much.”
- “The train chase was my favourite bit—I want to draw it!”
- “It felt like we were inside the story.”
- “I can’t wait to write my own film review now!”
Miss Ward, KS1 teacher, shared:
“Our children were absolutely captivated. It’s such a gift to be able to walk to the cinema and enjoy an experience that brings learning alive. We’re so grateful to the Odeon team for welcoming us so warmly.”
Miss Corrigan, KS1 teacher, added:
“The children were buzzing with ideas afterwards. This is exactly the kind of experience that helps them shine—full of imagination, excitement and shared joy.”
✍️ Next Steps: Becoming Mini Film Critics
Back at school, the children will be using their experience to write their very own film reviews. We’ve been talking about what makes a great review, including:
- Start with a punchy sentence to hook your reader
- Describe the characters and who your favourite was
- Explain a moment that stood out and why
- Use adventurous vocabulary to show your opinion
- Give a star rating and a recommendation
We can’t wait to see their creativity shine as they develop their writing skills.
🙏 Thank You
A huge thank you to the Odeon Harrogate for making us feel so welcome, and to all our wonderful parents and carers who helped walk the children there and back safely. We are truly blessed to have such a brilliant resource in our community.
