Collective Worship: Exploring Forgiveness Through the Story of the Prodigal Son
This week in Collective Worship, our children spent time exploring one of Jesus’ most powerful parables The Prodigal Son. As part of our school vision to Love, Learn, Shine, we reflected on how forgiveness helps us grow as individuals and as a community.
The Story: A Reminder of God’s Endless Love
The children listened to the story of a father who welcomes his son home with open arms, even after he has made mistakes. We talked about how the father’s joy and kindness reflect God’s love for us—love that forgives, restores, and gives each of us the chance to begin again.
This message sits at the heart of life at St Peter’s:
- Love – offering compassion even when it is challenging
- Learn – recognising that mistakes help us grow
- Shine – choosing to bring light to others through kindness and understanding
How We Can Live Out Forgiveness Every Day
Together, we explored how forgiveness isn’t always easy, but it can make our hearts feel lighter and help friendships flourish. The children shared thoughtful ideas such as:
- Saying “sorry” even when it feels hard
- Giving someone another chance
- Letting go of small arguments
- Remembering that everyone makes mistakes
- Speaking kindly even when we feel upset
We encouraged children to think about a time when they were forgiven and how that made them feel.
Ideas to Spark Discussion at Home
Families might enjoy continuing this conversation at home with a few simple prompts:
- What does forgiveness mean to you?
- Why do you think the father in the story forgave his son?
- Is there someone you might need to forgive this week?
- How does forgiving someone help both people?
- What difference would forgiveness make in our family?
Even a short chat can help children develop empathy, resilience and emotional confidence—important steps in helping them shine.
A Short Forgiveness Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for your never‑ending love and forgiveness.
Help us to be brave enough to say sorry, kind enough to forgive others,
and hopeful enough to make a fresh start every day.
May your love help us to love, learn and shine.
Amen.
