🧊 Year 2 Explore Division Through Practical, Hands‑On Learning

This week in Miss Corrigan’s class, the children have been busy diving into the world of division—and they’ve done it in the best possible way: through practical exploration, rich discussion, and lots of hands‑on learning.
To build secure early understanding, the children used cubes to explore the idea that division is all about making equal groups. They practised arranging cubes into groups of 2s, 5s, and 10s, carefully counting how many equal groups they could make each time.
A key moment of discovery came when the children investigated numbers that don’t make equal groups. When trying to split 13 cubes into 2 equal groups, the children quickly realised this wasn’t possible—and this sparked some brilliant mathematical reasoning. Through their talk and thinking, they were able to explain why odd numbers cannot be shared equally into two groups.
These practical activities helped the children build a meaningful foundation for understanding division as both sharing equally and grouping—a key part of the Year 2 maths journey.
As always, our children shone brightly, demonstrating curiosity, perseverance, and a love of learning that reflects our school vision: Love, Learn, Shine.
