Year 4 Shine as Eco‑Engineers in DT with Mrs Pywell
This week, our Year 4 children have been immersed in an exciting Design & Technology project led by Mrs Pywell, exploring what it means to build a truly sustainable city. With incredible imagination and thoughtful teamwork, the children designed and constructed model cityscapes that protect the planet, support communities and inspire greener living.
Linking beautifully to our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine, the project encouraged the children to love and value the natural world, learn about environmental responsibility, and shine as creative problem‑solvers and future change‑makers.
What Makes a Sustainable City?
The children investigated the features modern cities use to reduce waste, lower energy use and support nature. Their brilliant ideas included:
- ♻️ Compost bins to reduce food waste
- 💧 Water butts to collect rainwater
- 🚗 Electric cars and eco‑friendly transport links
- 🚉 Public transport hubs, including clever bike‑borrow stations
- ☀️ Solar panels and 🌬️ wind turbines for clean energy
- 🌿 Green living walls and roofs to help keep buildings cool and support wildlife
- 🌳 Rewilded areas in parks and along pavements
- 🥕 Planters and shared growing spaces where local people can grow their own fruit and vegetables

Bringing Their Ideas to Life
Working in teams, the children used a range of materials to build their own mini cities, planning layouts that balanced homes, green spaces, transport routes and sustainable energy sources. Their finished models were not only beautifully presented, but also showed a developing understanding of how everyday choices can shape a fairer, greener future.
“I am so proud of how thoughtfully the children approached this project. They showed a real awareness of how our choices impact the world, and their creative ideas were inspiring. Watching them work together to design a city that cares for both people and the planet was a real joy.”

A Project That Connects to Real‑World Hope
This learning sits at the heart of our commitment to nurturing children who see themselves as active global citizens. The sustainable cities created by Year 4 show what happens when children are empowered to think big, show care for the world and let their ideas shine.
We are incredibly proud of their creativity, teamwork and ambition — well done, Year 4!
