🌱 Courage to Care: Lessons from Miriam and Moses 💛

Dec
At St Peter’s, our vision of Love, Learn, Shine comes alive when we explore what it means to show compassion—even when it feels hard or risky. Today, our worship focused on the story of Miriam and baby Moses (Exodus 2:1–10). It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes caring takes courage.
In the story, Miriam faced a frightening situation. Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed, and her little brother Moses was in danger. His mother placed him in a basket on the river, and Miriam watched anxiously. When Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby, Miriam bravely stepped forward and offered help. Her courage and compassion saved Moses—and changed history.

What We Learned
  • Compassion isn’t just feeling sorry for someone—it’s taking action.
  • Even when problems seem too big, one person can make a difference.
  • God calls us to notice needs and respond with love and bravery.
We ended with a beautiful prayer based on Canon Farrar’s words:
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do. And what I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do.”

Questions for Families
To help children reflect at home, here are some thoughtful questions you can ask:
  1. Why do you think Miriam was so brave?
  2. Have you ever helped someone even when it was hard or scary? How did it feel?
  3. What does ‘I am only one, but I can do something’ mean to you?
  4. Can you think of a time when you noticed someone needed help? What did you do?
  5. How can we show courage and compassion in our school or community this week?

Family Activity: Create a Courage Jar
Here’s a simple way to bring this worship theme into your home:
  • Find an empty jar and decorate it with the words “Courage to Care”.
  • Each time someone in the family notices an act of compassion or bravery—big or small—write it on a slip of paper and pop it in the jar.
  • At the end of the week, read the notes together and celebrate how your family has shown Love, Learn, Shine through caring.
