❤️ Love, Learn, Shine: Children Empowered Through First Aid Training

Over the past two weeks, children in Starlings and Herons classes have taken part in two engaging one‑hour first aid workshops, led by Helen Rogers, an experienced trainer from St John Ambulance.
Across the sessions, children learned vital life‑saving knowledge and skills, forming part of the statutory Health Education curriculum in primary schools. They explored how to:
  • recognise when someone needs help
  • make a clear and effective 999 call
  • respond safely to head injuries, bleeding, burns and nosebleeds
Alongside these practical skills, the workshops helped children build confidence, calm decision‑making and resilience, encouraging them to think carefully about how to respond in real‑life situations.
The workshops were approached with huge enthusiasm. Children asked thoughtful questions, listened carefully and showed excellent focus as they practised new skills. Many commented on how empowering it felt to know they could help someone in an emergency, with a surprising number leaving the sessions proudly announcing ambitions to become paramedics or doctors in the future!
We are extremely grateful to St John Ambulance and Helen Rogers for delivering such inspiring, memorable and confidence‑building learning experiences for our children.
These sessions strongly reflect our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine:
  • Love – caring for others and knowing how to help
  • Learn – developing essential life skills and knowledge
  • Shine – growing in confidence and self‑belief

🦡 Further Opportunities: St John Ambulance Badgers

For families interested in developing their child’s first aid skills further, St John Ambulance Badgers is a youth programme for children aged 5–10 years, offering an introduction to first aid and safety.
There are currently Badgers groups locally in Harrogate, Starbeck and Ripon.
Parents who would like their child to join or attend a taster session can contact the local Youth Network Lead, Catherine Pearce, by email:
