🀝 Learning to Respect – Our New Worship Series Begins

Jun
Today we gathered together for the first collective worship in our new series on Respect, a theme we will be exploring throughout this half term. It was a calm, thoughtful and meaningful start that encouraged our children to think carefully about how they treat others, themselves and the world around them.
We began by grounding our worship in our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine, reflecting on the Bible verse β€œThe light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out” (John 1:5). The children were reminded that, just as Jesus is described as the light of the world, we too are called to shine our light through our words and actions every day.

What is Respect?

Together, we explored what respect really means. The children shared thoughtful ideas about how respect is shown through:
  • Kindness and good manners
  • Listening carefully to others
  • Valuing everyone
  • Caring for people, places and things
We talked about how being respectful isn’t just something we say – it’s something we do, through our actions and choices each day.

RESPECT – what it looks like in action

The children were introduced to a powerful way of remembering how respect can guide our behaviour:
  • R – Readiness to listen
  • E – Everyone being valued
  • S – Showing appreciation
  • P – Polite words like β€œplease” and β€œthank you”
  • E – Expressing opinions sensitively
  • C – Care for people, places and things
  • T – Treat others the way you want to be treated
These ideas sparked lots of reflection about who and what we respect, and why.

Respecting others through prayer and reflection

As part of our worship, we thought about how one way we can show respect is by thinking about others and praying for them. Using the Hand Prayer, the children were gently guided to reflect on friends, family, leaders, those in need and themselves, reminding them that everyone matters and everyone deserves care and compassion.
We finished with a peaceful time of prayer and reflection, encouraging the children to think about:
  • What they have noticed (the window)
  • How they feel inside (the mirror)
  • What they might do next (the door)

Love. Learn. Shine.

This worship set a wonderful foundation for the weeks ahead. By learning about respect, our children are growing in love for others, learning how their actions make a difference, and shining their light in our school and wider world.
We are excited to continue this journey together as a school family.
