πŸŽπŸ‘½ From Planning to Pencil Pots – Sparrows Shine in DT

Year 2 Sparrows have been busy exploring structures in Design and Technology, and what an exciting journey it has been!
The children investigated a range of materials and joining techniques, learning how different choices can affect the strength and stability of a structure. They explored why a secure base is so important, testing ideas and discussing how designs can be strengthened to make them more successful.
After careful planning, the children designed their own pencil pot structures, thinking thoughtfully about shape, balance and stability. Today, they proudly created their final products, each one featuring a strong base to help keep it secure.
The creativity on display was fantastic – designs included animals, dinosaurs, aliens, fruit and many imaginative ideas. Even when things became tricky, the children showed brilliant perseverance and determination, making adjustments and problem-solving with confidence.
It was also lovely to see such supportive teamwork, with children helping and encouraging one another throughout the process – a real reflection of our school values.
Miss Corrigan says:
β€œI have been so proud of the way the children approached this project. They thought carefully about their designs, showed real resilience when things didn’t go to plan, and supported each other so kindly. Their creativity and determination truly shone.”
This learning experience beautifully reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine – showing love through teamwork and encouragement, learning through thoughtful design and problem-solving, and shining through creativity and perseverance.

🏠 Questions to Ask at Home

Parents and carers might like to ask:
  • What materials did you choose for your pencil pot and why?
  • How did you make sure your structure was strong and stable?
  • What went well with your design?
  • Was there anything you found tricky? How did you solve it?
  • If you made it again, what would you change or improve?
Well done, Year 2 Sparrows – you really did shine! 🌟
