This week, our Year 6 children enjoyed an exciting and highly valuable visit to Crucial Crew, where they took part in a series of interactive workshops designed to help them stay safe and make positive choices as they grow.
Delivered by a range of local experts including North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service this long‑standing programme has supported children across the region for over 20 years, equipping them with essential life skills.
🚦 Real‑life learning that matters
Throughout the afternoon, the children rotated through engaging, hands‑on scenarios, each focused on a different aspect of personal safety and wellbeing. These included:
- Road safety and making safe choices near traffic
- Water safety and understanding risks in different environments
- Online safety and responsible digital behaviour
- How to make an emergency call confidently and effectively
Each workshop gave children the chance to think carefully, ask questions and practise what they would do in real‑life situations developing confidence, independence and resilience.
🌟 Learning from the experts
One of the highlights of the experience was meeting the professionals who help keep our communities safe every day. Hearing directly from emergency services staff brought the learning to life and helped children understand the importance of staying calm, making good decisions and looking out for others.
The interactive nature of the sessions meant children were fully engaged throughout, with many commenting on how enjoyable and important the learning felt.
❤️ Living our vision: Love, Learn, Shine
This experience linked beautifully to our school vision:
- Love – caring for ourselves and others by learning how to stay safe
- Learn – gaining vital knowledge and life skills that will support children beyond the classroom
- Shine – growing in confidence, independence and the ability to make responsible choices
Opportunities like Crucial Crew are a powerful reminder that education is not only about academic success, but also about helping children develop the skills they need to thrive in the wider world.
đź’¬ Continuing the conversation at home
We encourage families to talk with their child about what they learned:
- What would you do in an emergency?
- How can we stay safe near roads or water?
- Who could you go to for help if you needed it?
By sharing and revisiting this learning, we can help children embed these crucial messages for life.
We are incredibly proud of the maturity, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness shown by our Year 6 children throughout this experience. They truly demonstrated what it means to Love, Learn and Shine! ✨
