🚂 Wrens and Owls Railway Museum Trip
Wrens and Owls classes had an amazing day at the National Railway Museum in York, enjoying a fun‑filled visit packed with science, engineering and discovery.
Our first stop was Wonderlab, where the children explored the exciting science behind trains through hands‑on activities and live demonstrations. They learned about aerodynamics and fuels, jumped into the human wind tunnel, launched rockets and tested just how fast they could send balls racing through the Great Machine. There was plenty of excitement as the children experimented, predicted outcomes and celebrated when things worked (and even when they didn’t!).
The children also put their engineering skills to the test by building structures strong enough to survive an earthquake. Live science shows brought learning to life, and the friendly Wonderlab Explainers helped the children understand how and why everything worked, encouraging curiosity and thoughtful questions throughout the day.
After Wonderlab, the adventure continued around the wider Railway Museum. The children loved exploring the model railway and were especially thrilled to step inside the Japanese bullet train, sparking lots of conversation about speed, design and travel around the world.
“The children were completely absorbed all day. They showed such enthusiasm, curiosity and teamwork – it was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explored and experimented together,” said Mrs Renton.
“What really stood out was how keen the children were to talk about what they were learning. They made thoughtful connections and asked brilliant questions – a real joy to see,” added Miss Wilson.
Did you know the National Railway Museum is free to access all year round, making it a fantastic local resource for family visits and further learning?
💬 Conversation starters for home
To help get the children chatting about their day, parents might ask:
- What was your favourite thing you explored in Wonderlab and why?
- How did the human wind tunnel feel?
- What did you learn about how trains move so fast?
- What was special about the Japanese bullet train?
- If you could design your own train, what would it include?
This visit perfectly reflected our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine – showing love through shared experiences, learning through curiosity and hands‑on exploration, and shining as confident, enthusiastic learners.
🌟 Every class will be visiting the Railway Museum over the coming half term, so keep an eye on the website for more exciting adventures to come!
