🌄 From Mountains to Maps – Starlings Soar!

Starlings Class (Year 4) have been busy geographers this week, diving into the fascinating world of maps and landscapes as part of their learning about the Yorkshire Dales.
The children explored topographical and contour maps, developing their understanding of how maps represent the physical features of the land. They showed great curiosity and determination as they learnt how to read contour lines and interpret the shapes of hills and valleys. This growing confidence in reading, interpreting and understanding maps is such important foundational knowledge, opening a doorway not only to future geography learning but also to a lifetime of adventure and exploration.
Building on this, the children also discovered how the landscape around us has been shaped over time. They learnt that mountains and hills are formed by tectonic plate movements, and explored how powerful glaciers carved out valleys thousands of years ago. The children were particularly fascinated by the role of limestone rock in shaping the distinctive features of the Yorkshire Dales, deepening their appreciation for the natural beauty of our local area.
Throughout the lesson, the children were not only gaining knowledge but also developing key geographical skills that will support them in wider studies as they move through school. These early building blocks are vital—helping children to understand the world around them and equipping them with skills that will stay with them for life.

Mrs Pywell shared her pride in the class, saying:

“The children have shown fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity in their geography learning. It has been wonderful to see them making connections between maps and the landscapes around them—they should be very proud of their work!”

This fantastic learning experience reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine—the children have loved exploring, worked hard to deepen their understanding, and truly shone in their engagement and enthusiasm.
Well done, Starlings Class—what brilliant geographers you are becoming! 🌟
