FizzFuel Investigators: Which Liquid Dissolves Sugar the Fastest?

This week in Science, our Year 5 and 6 children became real scientists as they explored an exciting question linked to their FizzFuel project: How long does sugar take to dissolve in different liquids?
Using their scientific enquiry skills, the children carefully planned and carried out a comparative and fair test investigation, ensuring that only one variable was changed at a time. They observed closely, measured accurately and recorded their results, just as scientists do in the real world.
Throughout the lesson, children used a range of scientific stem sentences to explain their thinking, including:
  • “I predict that…”
  • “To make this a fair test, we will…”
  • “I observed that…”
  • “The evidence suggests…”
  • “My conclusion is…”
  • “I know this because…”
As part of the National Curriculum for Science, the children developed important working scientifically skills by asking questions, making predictions, carrying out tests, recording data and drawing conclusions from evidence.
The investigation sparked lots of discussion about healthy lifestyles, the role of sugar in drinks and how science can help us make informed choices. Children were fascinated to discover that different liquids affected the dissolving process in different ways, leading to some surprising results and thoughtful scientific conversations.

“We were incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm, curiosity and teamwork shown throughout the investigation. The children demonstrated excellent scientific enquiry skills, thinking carefully about how to carry out a fair test and using evidence to support their conclusions. It was wonderful to see them applying their learning so confidently.”

🏡 Follow-Up Science at Home

Why not continue the learning at home by trying some simple investigations together?
  • Test whether sugar dissolves faster in hot or cold water.
  • Compare how quickly salt and sugar dissolve.
  • Time how long a fizzy drink keeps its bubbles compared to still water.
  • Make predictions before each test and discuss the results afterwards.
  • Encourage your child to use scientific language such as predict, observe, evidence and conclusion.
At St Peter’s, we love seeing our children ask questions, investigate the world around them and develop their confidence as young scientists. Through opportunities like this, they truly Love, Learn and Shine. ✨
