We are delighted to be starting our work with Big Green Heart, an innovative emotional wellbeing programme that supports children to understand, express and manage their feelings in a nurturing and inclusive way. We are especially pleased to be working with Mrs Liz Clow, who will be delivering Big Green Heart sessions alongside Mrs Jones and Mrs Roberts with groups of children from across the school.
๐ฑ What is Big Green Heart?
Big Green Heart is a nurtureโbased emotional intelligence intervention designed to help all children develop essential life skills in a safe and supportive environment. Using practical visual tools and guided discussion, Big Green Heart helps children to:
- Identify and name their feelings
- Understand emotional triggers
- Explore how experiences affect emotions and behaviour
- Develop healthy ways to cope with everyday challenges
- Build resilience for the future
A key element of the approach is helping children explore the idea of forgiveness, supporting emotional wellbeing by encouraging children to release worries or grudges in a way that feels safe, respectful and entirely their own choice.
๐ Positive impact across the whole school
While some children will take part in Big Green Heart sessions directly, the impact extends much more widely. The language, strategies and shared understanding developed through the programme help to shape a wholeโschool culture of empathy, kindness and emotional awareness, benefiting children and staff alike.
Big Green Heart creates a safe space where children feel:
- Seen and heard
- Able to express emotions without judgement
- Supported to develop selfโregulation and emotional vocabulary
- Confident in building healthy relationships
These skills support children not only in school, but throughout their lives beyond the classroom.
๐ Inclusion at the heart of the work
Mrs Jones, our Inclusion Lead, shared:
โBig Green Heart plays a vital role in supporting inclusion at St Peterโs. It gives children the tools and language they need to understand their feelings and recognise that everyone experiences emotions differently. By creating safe spaces for emotional expression, we are helping all children to feel valued, understood and supported to flourish.โ
By working closely together, Mrs Jones, Mrs Roberts and Mrs Liz Clow ensure that this approach complements our wider inclusion and wellbeing provision, supporting children with a range of needs while strengthening emotional understanding across the whole school.
โจ Love, Learn and Shine
Our work with Big Green Heart strongly reflects our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine:
- ๐ Love โ nurturing compassion, forgiveness and care for ourselves and others
- ๐ Learn โ developing emotional intelligence and lifelong coping skills
- โจ Shine โ giving children the confidence to grow, thrive and build positive relationships
We are excited about the journey ahead and look forward to seeing the positive impact this work will have on our children, our staff and our wider school community.
