Learning to Appreciate: Building Positive Mental Health at St Peter’s

This week, our children have begun an exciting new myHappymind unit called “Appreciate”. This half term, we’ll be exploring what it means to notice and value the good things in life – from the kindness of friends to the beauty of the world around us.
Through engaging activities and thoughtful discussions, children will learn how practising gratitude can boost wellbeing and help them shine every day. These lessons link beautifully to our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine, encouraging children to love themselves and others, learn strategies for positive thinking, and shine with confidence and joy.
We’ve already seen wonderful conversations in classrooms about what makes each child feel thankful. It’s inspiring to watch them recognise the small moments that make a big difference!

What We’ve Learnt So Far

  • How to develop an Attitude of Gratitude
  • How to be grateful for others, experiences, and ourselves
  • How giving and receiving gratitude makes us feel
Why not ask your child:
  • What have you been grateful for today and how did you show it?
  • How does it make you feel when you give or receive gratitude?
  • Can you name the three categories on the Wheel of Gratitude?

Tips for Parents: Practising Gratitude at Home

  • Start a Gratitude Jar: Encourage your child to write down one thing they’re thankful for each day and pop it in a jar. At the end of the week, read them together.
  • Model Appreciation: Share what you’re grateful for at mealtimes or bedtime. Children learn by example!
  • Notice the Little Things: Point out acts of kindness or moments of beauty during the day – it helps children see gratitude everywhere.
  • Create a Thank You Habit: Encourage your child to say “thank you” and explain why – it makes appreciation more meaningful.
Together, we can help children build positive habits that last a lifetime.
