This half term in Geography, our Year 2 children in Sparrows class have been diving into the exciting big question: βWould you choose to live by the seaside?β π
Throughout the unit, the children have been learning about and comparing two very different coastal locations β the Yorkshire Coast and the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have truly shone this week as they focused on exploring life on the Gold Coast.
On Thursday, the classroom was buzzing with energy as the children demonstrated fantastic teamwork and collaboration. Working in groups, they carefully read and researched information, selecting key facts and sharing ideas with one another. Using whiteboards, they organised their findings into scripts, practising clearly and confidently before presenting to their peers β a wonderful example of growing communication skills.
Miss Corrigan shared her pride in their efforts, saying:
βI have been so impressed with how the children worked together this week β they showed such enthusiasm when discovering the Gold Coast and spoke so confidently when sharing their ideas. They are becoming brilliant young geographers!β
The children discovered that the Gold Coast is located in the north-east of Australia, next to the Pacific Ocean. They identified a range of physical features, such as coral reefs, sandy beaches and rock pools, alongside human features including skyscrapers, hotels and theme parks.
Building on this knowledge, the children then began comparing the Gold Coast with the Yorkshire Coast. They revisited their previous learning and worked thoughtfully in pairs to explore similarities and differences, using Venn diagrams to organise their ideas. Their discussions showed excellent listening, reasoning and teamwork skills.
We are incredibly proud of the childrenβs curiosity, cooperation and enthusiasm as they continue their journey as young geographers. They are truly living out our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine every step of the way. β¨
We look forward to seeing where their learning takes them next!
