π Fireworks, Fun and Fantastic Learning
This week, the children in Wrens enjoyed a range of exciting Bonfire Night and fireworks-themed activities, combining creativity, early reading, outdoor learning and important safety messages.
The children learned all about how to stay safe around fireworks and bonfires, discussing why safety rules are important and sharing their own experiences of Bonfire Night celebrations. These conversations were a valuable part of their learning, helping to develop confidence in speaking, listening and expressing ideas, while also building their understanding of the world around them.
Using autumn leaves collected from the garden, the children created beautiful firework-inspired artwork. As they explored different colours, textures and patterns, they talked about their ideas with friends and adults, developing rich vocabulary and learning from one another. This linked closely to Expressive Arts and Design and Understanding the World, as the children explored both seasonal changes and their own creativity.
One of the highlights of the week was a firework-themed CVC word hunt during outdoor learning. The children worked together to search for hidden words, sounding out letters and blending sounds to read them. The activity generated lots of excitement and discussion, encouraging the children to explain their thinking, solve problems collaboratively and celebrate each other’s successes. These meaningful opportunities for talk are a key part of developing early literacy skills and supporting children’s language development.
Throughout all of the activities, oracy played a central role. The children were encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, explain their learning and engage in conversations with both adults and their peers. These interactions help to build confidence, deepen understanding and strengthen communication skills that support learning across all areas of the curriculum.
Mrs Renton said, “It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged in their learning this week. From discussing firework safety to sharing ideas during art and literacy activities, they have shown fantastic enthusiasm, creativity and confidence when talking about their learning.”
The week provided rich opportunities across the EYFS areas of Communication and Language, Literacy, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Expressive Arts and Design, Physical Development and Understanding the World. Most importantly, it was a wonderful example of our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine in action, with the children showing curiosity, teamwork and enjoyment in all that they did.
What a fantastic week so far of learning in Wrens! ππβ¨
