🎨 Observing, Mixing and Creating: Sparrows’ Flower Artwork

Over the last few weeks, children in Sparrows class (Year 2) have been developing their artistic skills through a beautiful exploration of flowers, colour and creativity.
The children began by carefully observing real flowers, taking time to look closely at petal shapes, lines, patterns and tiny details. They used these observations to create detailed drawings from real life, learning how careful looking can help them to represent what they see more accurately.
Building on this, the children explored colour mixing, experimenting with paint to match the wide range of colours and shades found in flowers. They discovered how small changes could create lighter, darker or more realistic tones, and enjoyed the challenge of getting colours “just right”.
Next, the children combined paint and oil pastels to create their own flower artwork. They thought carefully about layering, shade and how to add depth and dimension, making individual choices as their ideas developed. Every piece was unique and reflected each child’s growing confidence and creativity.
Finally, Sparrows class worked together to create a collaborative collage, bringing all of their artwork together into one striking display. The finished piece celebrates both individual creativity and shared learning, and the children are extremely proud of the result, which now takes pride of place in the classroom.

Miss Corrigan, Sparrows class teacher, shared how learning can continue at home:

“You could ask your child what details they noticed first when they looked at the flowers, or why they chose certain colours for their artwork. It’s lovely to talk about how their ideas changed as they worked. At home, families could go on a flower walk, sketch a plant from the garden or park, or experiment with mixing colours using paints or pencils to see what new shades they can create together.”

This learning perfectly reflects our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine — showing love through care and collaboration, learning through close observation and experimentation, and shining as children grow in confidence, creativity and pride in their achievements. We are so proud of Sparrows class and the thoughtful, joyful way they have embraced this artistic journey.
