Exploring Anger Through Poetry in Year 4

This week, the Year 4 children have been exploring emotions through poetry, inspired by the thoughtful and inspiring book The Dot.
As part of their English learning, the children focused on the emotion of anger, thinking carefully about how it can feel inside their bodies and minds. They explored how anger can build suddenly or slowly, just like different types of weather, and used this idea to create powerful metaphors and imagery in their poems.
The children described anger as rumbling thunder, swirling storms, blazing heat and heavy rain, choosing language carefully to help the reader really feel the emotion. They also spent time practising how to perform their poems, using expression, volume and pace to bring their writing to life.

Mrs Pywell, Year 4 class teacher, said:

β€œThe children approached this work with real thoughtfulness and creativity. They showed a strong understanding of how emotions affect us and used imaginative imagery to express this in their poems. Their confidence when performing was wonderful to see.”

This work links beautifully to our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine. The children showed love by recognising and reflecting on emotions, learning through developing their use of metaphor and performance skills, and truly shone as confident, expressive young poets.
We are pleased to share some examples below, which celebrate the children’s creativity, honesty and impressive use of language.
