🌲 Building Confidence and Friendship: Year 4’s Herd Farm Adventure
Year 4 had an amazing time this week during their two-day residential visit to Herd Farm, creating memories that will last a lifetime. For many children, this was their first experience of being away from home, and they rose to the challenge with enthusiasm, courage and smiles throughout.
Herd Farm is an award‑winning residential centre, set in a beautifully restored Grade II listed 18th‑century former working farm, originally built in 1760. Now a stunning, fully accessible residential barn designed especially for schools, it provided the perfect setting for our children to learn, grow and shine.
🌿 Learning Beyond the Classroom
The residential experience offered children a rich range of outdoor and adventurous activities, each designed to build confidence, resilience and teamwork. Across the two days, children challenged themselves both physically and emotionally, often conquering fears and discovering just how capable they are.
Activities included:
- 🧗 Climbing and high‑wire challenges
- 🎯 Archery
- 🌲 Bushcraft and camp craft skills
- 🔥 Lighting fires using flint
- 🪢 Learning knots and practical outdoor skills
- 🧠Map skills and orienteering
- đź’¨ The giant zip line and giant swing
Every activity encouraged children to persevere, support one another and celebrate success together. It was wonderful to see children encouraging their friends, stepping outside their comfort zones and showing such determination.
🤝 Growing Independence and Teamwork
Being away from home gave children valuable opportunities to develop independence, co‑operation and responsibility. They shared dormitory spaces, organised their belongings, and worked together throughout the day.
Mealtimes were a particular highlight. Children ate together, tried new foods, cleared tables and helped one another — all important life skills that build confidence and social development in a supportive environment.
Evenings were filled with laughter, conversation and calm reflection, allowing friendships to deepen and children to enjoy extended time together in such lovely surroundings.
🌟 Love, Learn, Shine
This residential perfectly reflected our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine:
- Love – shown through kindness, teamwork and support for one another
- Learn – through new skills, challenges and real‑life experiences
- Shine – as children grew in confidence, resilience and independence
The children did incredibly well, particularly those experiencing their first night away from home. Every child should feel immensely proud of what they achieved.
đź’™ Thank You

Thank you also to the whole staff team those who accompanied the children and those working hard behind the scenes to organise and support the visit. It truly was a whole‑school effort.
We are delighted to share some photographs from the visit below, capturing just a few of the special moments from this fantastic Year 4 residential.
