đź’·Â Making Money Make Sense! Sparrows Explore Coins in Maths
This week in Sparrows Class, our Year 2 children have been busy becoming confident money experts as they explored different ways to make the same amount using coins.
Through hands‑on, practical activities, the children:
- Explored coins to find different ways to make the same total
- Used number sentences and equations to show their thinking
- Discovered that there are many possible combinations for one amount
- Learned that some methods are more efficient than others
The classroom was full of thoughtful discussion, careful reasoning and plenty of excited “aha!” moments as the children compared their ideas and explained their choices to one another.
Miss Corrigan shared:
“The children were fantastic at explaining their thinking today. They loved discovering that the same amount of money can be made in lots of different ways, and they were beginning to spot which combinations were quicker and more efficient. Their confidence and mathematical talk really helped them shine.”
This learning supports our school vision beautifully:
- Love – encouraging confidence and collaboration
- Learn – developing strong number sense and reasoning
- Shine – celebrating children’s growing independence and problem‑solving skills

🏡 Questions Parents Can Ask at Home
Talking about maths helps children secure their understanding. You might like to ask:
- Can you show me two different ways to make 20p?
- Which coins did you choose first — and why?
- Is there a way to make the amount using fewer coins?
- How could you write that as a number sentence?
- Which way do you think is the most efficient?
- How do you know both ways are worth the same amount?
You could even try this learning using real coins at home sorting, combining and explaining choices together.
We are so proud of how the Sparrows children approached this learning with curiosity, enthusiasm and confidence. They are well on their way to becoming thoughtful, flexible mathematicians who truly Love, Learn and Shine 🌟💛
