🌞 A Glorious Start at Herd Farm! – Year 4 Day One Adventures

Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic first day at the award‑winning Herd Farm Outdoor Activity Centre, blessed with glorious sunshine as they set off on their residential adventure.
Herd Farm is a Grade II listed, 18th‑century former working farm, built in 1760 and thoughtfully converted between 1997–2000 into a stunning and fully accessible residential centre, with schools at its heart. The setting immediately captured the children’s imaginations and provided the perfect environment for learning beyond the classroom.

🏡 Settling In & Exploring

On arrival, the children were warmly welcomed by the Herd Farm team and quickly began to get to know their surroundings. They showed great independence and teamwork while setting up dormitories, making beds and settling in. A guided tour of the site helped everyone feel confident and comfortable in their new environment.
After a lively and much‑needed hot lunch, the children enjoyed time exploring the site, including the sensory garden and open fields, before taking part in energetic games such as scatterball. Spirits were high, friendships were flourishing and excitement for the afternoon activities was building.

🧗 Afternoon Activities – Learning Through Challenge

The afternoon saw children rotate through a range of exciting outdoor activities, including:
  • Climbing
  • Zip wire
  • Bushcraft
  • Archery
These activities are carefully designed to promote team building, resilience, communication and personal confidence. Outdoor education plays a vital role in children’s development, offering opportunities to:
  • Build self‑belief and independence
  • Develop problem‑solving and leadership skills
  • Strengthen friendships and cooperation
  • Learn how to manage risk safely
  • Experience success in new and challenging situations
The children approached every challenge with enthusiasm, encouragement for one another and a real sense of achievement — truly embodying our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine.

🍽️ Evening Fun & Teamwork

After a delicious hot evening meal, the children enjoyed time with friends, taking part in a mix of indoor and outdoor games. A closely fought game of giant outdoor chess proved very popular!
The highlight of the evening was an exciting orienteering challenge across the site, where children worked in teams to navigate using maps, developing map‑reading skills, communication and teamwork. The competition was friendly but very competitive, with lots of encouragement and celebration of effort.
As the day drew to a close, the children were tired but happy, full of stories and already looking forward to Day Two.

đź’› Thank You

A huge thank you to our staff for facilitating this valuable residential experience and to parents and carers for supporting their children to take part. These shared experiences create memories that last a lifetime and play a key role in helping our children grow in confidence and independence.
We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to school, where Year 4 will be excited to share their adventures and reflect on everything they have learned.
