🌊 Drowning Prevention Week: Keeping Children Safe Around Wate

Jun
As many of you will have read, over the recent half‑term several children and young people across the UK tragically lost their lives in rivers and lakes during the warm weather. These heartbreaking reports remind us how quickly accidents can happen around water, even for confident swimmers.
With this in mind, St Peter’s CE Primary School will be taking part in Drowning Prevention Week, during which we will be sharing key water‑safety messages with children in an age‑appropriate and sensitive way. We wanted to make families aware of this focus so that the messages shared in school can be reinforced at home, helping children to stay safe as the summer continues.
Throughout the week, children will be encouraged to think about:
  • The dangers of open water such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs and quarries
  • Why even strong swimmers can get into difficulty
  • The importance of never entering water without adult supervision
  • Staying away from the edges of water and avoiding jumping or diving
  • Speaking up and telling an adult if something feels unsafe
These discussions will be handled carefully, with reassurance and clarity, and will focus on empowering children to make sensible, safe choices, rather than creating fear.

🏡 How parents and carers can support at home

Talking about water safety at home can make a huge difference. You might find it helpful to:
  • Ask your child what they have learned during Drowning Prevention Week
  • Reinforce the message that open water is very different from swimming pools
  • Remind children that it is always okay to say “no” to something unsafe
  • Agree clear family rules about water and outdoor play
By hearing consistent messages both at school and at home, children are more likely to remember and apply them when it matters most.

đź’– Love. Learn. Shine.

Our work during Drowning Prevention Week reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine:
  • Love – by caring for the safety and wellbeing of every child
  • Learn – by developing knowledge and understanding of real‑life risks
  • Shine – by making responsible choices and looking out for others
Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep all children safe. By working together as a school community, we can ensure that children are able to enjoy the summer months while staying safe and well.
