✌️🎨 Peace, Love and Learning: Whole School Goes Groovy for the 60s

Learning About a Decade That Changed the World

The day began with the children exploring a range of photographs from the 1960s, comparing life then and now. They spotted similarities and differences in fashion, transport, leisure activities and daily routines, sharing thoughtful observations and questions.
The children then explored a number of key events from the decade, including:
  • 🌙 The Moon Landing – when Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon in 1969
  • England’s historic Men’s World Cup win in 1966 – still the only time England has lifted the trophy
  • 🕷️ Did you know? Spider‑Man first appeared in comic form in 1962
  • The Civil Rights Movement, which helped bring about greater equality and justice
  • 🎶 60s music and fashion, from bold patterns to iconic bands
Using Mantle of the Expert, the children became specialists in their chosen areas and then taught one another, showing confidence, curiosity and impressive teamwork.
All of this learning took place while enjoying the sounds of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, and soaking up the sights of the era through clips such as Thunderbirds and learning dance moves like The Twist. It truly felt like a blast from the past!
Eagles and Ravens had a far‑out, fabulous day stepping back into the swinging 1960s, dressing up in true sixties style and throwing themselves enthusiastically into a day of learning, creativity and fun. The children looked amazing in their outfits, and the day included a best‑dressed competition, which added to the excitement and sense of celebration. It was wonderful to see so many children and families embracing the spirit of the decade so enthusiastically.

Creativity with a 60s Twist

In the afternoon, the children created wonderful 60s‑inspired artwork, drawing on the bold colours and patterns of artists such as Andy Warhol and Bridget Riley. These striking pieces will be used around school and also to decorate St Peter’s entry in the Knaresborough Bed Race.
A selection of our Andy Warhol‑inspired pop art for 60s Day is shared below, and we are so proud of the creativity and effort shown. Thanks to the children’s enthusiasm, the bed is going to look fantastic – we can’t wait to see it in action on race day!

Love, Learn, Shine

This day captured our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine perfectly:
  • Love – working together and celebrating a shared experience
  • Learn – discovering how the 1960s shaped the world we live in today
  • Shine – showing confidence, creativity and enthusiasm throughout the day
Well done to all the children for joining in so wholeheartedly and making Sixties Day such a memorable experience. A huge thank you as well for the shared planning that made this day such a success  the children are loving the activities!
