Inspired by History: Powerful Writing from Our Young Authors

Oct

Over the last few weeks children from Eagles and Ravens have been exploring the powerful themes in Beverley Naidoo’s Journey to Jo’burg, a story set during apartheid in South Africa. The book sparked thoughtful conversations and inspired children to learn more about Nelson Mandela—his life, his values, and his incredible journey towards justice and equality.

Driven by curiosity, the children carried out detailed research using books, trusted websites, and classroom resources. They explored Mandela’s early life, his activism, and his legacy, gathering facts and insights that would later inform their writing.

The results have been truly impressive. The children produced well-organised, thoughtful pieces that reflect not only their understanding of Mandela’s story but also their growing confidence and skill as writers. Their work showcases:

  • Strong and expressive language: Children used powerful vocabulary and sentence structures to convey emotion and meaning.
  • Clear organisation: Each piece flows logically, guiding the reader through key events and ideas with clarity.
  • Vivid description: Their writing brings historical moments to life, helping readers imagine the challenges Mandela faced.
  • Thorough research: Factual details are woven seamlessly into their writing, showing how hard work and curiosity led to informed and meaningful storytelling.

Presentation has also been a real highlight. The children took great pride in their final drafts, ensuring neat handwriting, accurate punctuation, and thoughtful layout. Many chose to include illustrations, timelines, or quotes to enhance their work even further.

We are incredibly proud of the effort, insight, and creativity shown by our young writers. Their work not only honours Nelson Mandela’s legacy but also reflects the values we nurture every day in school—respect, resilience, and a love of learning.

We are delighted to share some examples of their writing in the photographs below. It’s a celebration of history, hope, and the power of young voices.

Parents can come and have a closer look at their work in the open classrooms event after half term on Thursday 6 November 3.45 – 5.00.
