Music

This term, Herons have been composing pieces about the rainforest using a mix of tuned percussion and body percussion. Having written a 4-bar loop piece for each, they combined them, rehearsing and performing their pieces this week. We thought about how structure, pitch and dynamics made us think about different bits of the rainforest. Some of us even managed to include a glissando (a musical word we have learnt this term) to try to show the rain trickling down from the emergent layer to the forest floor.

Science

This half term, Herons have been learning about microorganisms. Following our experiment on the best conditions for growing mould, we have delved further into the world of these microscopic living things to learn about 3 main types: bacteria, fungi and viruses. Herons used playdoh to make models of the different types of organisms to help them learn about their features. They also had a lively debate about whether or not viruses are living things, something that even professional scientists disagree on. After some super persuasive and evidence-based arguing, the “not living” team managed to persuade all but 2 children that they were right! What fantastic scientists they all are!
