🌟 Love, Learn, Shine: Celebrating Our Learning Journey into Judaism

This week in Religious Education, Kingfishers have been learning about what it means to be Jewish.
They explored Judaism and some of its key beliefs, discovering how faith shapes daily life. One highlight was learning about the Shema, a very important Jewish prayer. The children found out that the words of the Shema are written on a scroll and placed inside a Mezuzah, which is fixed to the doorframe of a Jewish home. This serves as a beautiful reminder of God’s presence for the family.
Inspired by this tradition, we discussed what special words or messages we would want to display in our own homes and why. The children then wrote down their chosen words and created their own decorative casing to keep them safe just like a Mezuzah! It was wonderful to see their creativity and the thoughtful messages they chose.
Miss Ratcliffe said:
“The children really enjoyed learning about the Shema and the Mezuzah. It was lovely to see them thinking about what words are important to them and how they can bring those values into their own homes.”

Questions to Ask at Home

  • What is the Shema and why is it important in Judaism?
  • Why do Jewish families put a Mezuzah on their doorframe?
  • What special words did you choose for your own home and why?
  • How do these words remind you of what matters most to you?
