🏥 Clues, Curiosity and Courage – Year 2 Meet Florence Nightingale🔍

This week, the children in Sparrows have stepped into the shoes of history detectives as they began their exciting new unit: “Individuals Who Changed Britain.” Their first inspiring figure? The remarkable Florence Nightingale.
Led by Miss Corrigan, the children explored a series of intriguing clues in the classroom – a nurse’s uniform, a soldier’s photo, bandages, an old hospital picture, a lamp, and a map showing the UK and Italy. These clues sparked lively discussions and predictions about Florence’s life and work before the children learned more fascinating facts.
Working together, they completed observation grids, noting what they saw, what they thought, and what they later confirmed about Florence Nightingale. This hands-on approach helped the children develop critical thinking skills and a real sense of curiosity about the past.

Miss Corrigan shared:
“It was wonderful to see the children so engaged, asking thoughtful questions and making connections. They really embraced the challenge of being history detectives!”

Follow-Up Ideas for Families at Home

  • Create a Timeline: Encourage your child to draw a simple timeline of Florence’s life, adding key events they’ve learned.
  • Role Play: Pretend to be Florence Nightingale or a soldier in the Crimean War – what might they say or do?
This learning journey is a wonderful example of how our children Love to learn, shine with curiosity, and grow in understanding of those who shaped our world.
