🍴 Cooking Up Winter Wonders: Children Explore Seasonal Foods🌱 From Garden to Plate: Real-Life Learning in Action.

This week, our Herons and Starlings classes have been busy bringing the magic of seasonal food to life through Design and Technology. The children explored the importance of eating seasonally, learning where winter vegetables come from and how they are grown, prepared, and enjoyed.
After discovering the benefits of seasonal eating, the children rolled up their sleeves and practised a range of essential food preparation skills—washing, peeling, chopping, cutting, and assembling. Their hard work resulted in beautifully baked winter vegetable flans, bursting with colour and flavour! Each child proudly took their creation home to share and enjoy with their family.

Mrs Robbins, our Curriculum Lead, shared:
“Real-life experiences like this are invaluable. They help children connect learning to everyday life, develop practical skills, and build confidence. Cooking together brings creativity and teamwork into the classroom—it’s learning that truly shines!”

Follow-Up Ideas for Families

Want to keep the learning going at home? Here are some simple ideas:
  • Cook Together: Try making a simple seasonal soup or a vegetable stir-fry with your child.
  • Explore the Seasons: Visit a local market and talk about which fruits and vegetables are in season.
  • Get Creative: Encourage your child to design their own flan or pizza using seasonal toppings.

Questions to Ask Your Child

  • Which vegetables did you use in your flan?
  • Why is eating seasonal food good for us and the planet?
  • What new skill did you learn today in the kitchen?
  • How did you make sure your flan looked and tasted great?
