πŸŽ† Firework Words: Sparrows Spark Creativity in Poetry

Sparrows have been lighting up their English learning with a burst of creativity!

Today, our Year 2 children explored the magic of words by writing their very own firework poems. Inspired by a poem we read together, the children followed its pattern and used vibrant colours as a guide to bring their ideas to life.
As part of our learning, we focused on different word classes, making sure to include verbs and adverbs to add action and sparkle to our writing. First, we worked as a class to create a shared poem, thinking carefully about how words can paint pictures in our minds.
Then, using their word mats, the children drafted their own poems, improved them with thoughtful edits, and wrote them up beautifully. The results were truly dazzling – just like a firework display!

How Parents Can Keep the Spark Going at Home

  • Ask about their favourite line: β€œWhich part of your poem do you like best?”
  • Talk about fireworks together: Share memories and describe what you saw using exciting verbs and adverbs – just like they did in class!
  • Create a β€˜word explosion’ game: Pick a colour or sound and brainstorm as many describing words as you can.
  • Celebrate their creativity: Display their poem at home or share it with family members.
  • Read more poetry together: Short, fun poems are a great way to build vocabulary and rhythm.
