‘Wonder’ful Writing

Jan

In English children in Upper Key Stage Two have been reading and studying the moving and touching novel ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio. The book tells the story of August Pullman, born with a facial difference that, up until now,  prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Wonder, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others.

Through the study of this book children have developed their knowledge of Treacher-Collins syndrome (TCS) alongside thoughtful consideration of the range of feelings and emotions experienced by August and all those who loved him through his school journey. The children have produced excellent non chronological reports about TCS.
