🌈 Making 8 in Every Way: Hands-On Maths Fun for Our Children

This week in Maths, Wren’s class have been diving into the wonderful world of the number 8. What a fabulous week of learning it has been!
The children were challenged to find as many different ways to make 8 as they could, using a wide range of concrete resources. It was fantastic to see them exploring, experimenting and talking about their maths, showing just how confident and curious they are becoming as young mathematicians.
From numicon shapes to tens frames, from building blocks to ingeniously arranging “ants on a log” counters, the children embraced every opportunity to represent 8 in new and imaginative ways. Their enthusiasm filled the classroom, and it was a joy to watch them work together, compare ideas, and celebrate each new discovery.
This hands-on exploration not only deepened the children’s understanding of number but also reflected our school vision beautifully.
At St Peter’s, we Love, Learn, and Shine — and Wren’s class certainly shone brightly this week as they learned through play, teamwork, and creativity.
Well done, Wren’s class! We can’t wait to see what mathematical adventures you go on next.

Keep the learning going at home!

If your child would like to explore the number 8 even further, there are some brilliant online resources that match beautifully with our learning this week: – BBC Bitesize Early Years Maths has fun games and activities to build early number skills. –
Numberblocks, especially Numberblock 8, is a great way to help children visualise how numbers are made and how they grow. These child-friendly resources are a wonderful way to support confidence and curiosity at home helping our children continue to Love, Learn and Shine well beyond the classroom.
