🌱 Digging Deeper: Starlings Discover the Secrets of Soil 🌱

Year 4 Starling Class had a brilliant day investigating soils and creating colourful fold-out visuals to show their learning. These creative displays helped the children organise their ideas and celebrate what they’ve discovered. The children learnt that soil is a fascinating mixture of rocks, minerals, air, water and organic matter—including decomposed plants and animals! They explored different soil types such as sandy, peat and clay, and discussed what each type might be good for based on its properties.

Mrs Pywell shared her thoughts on the lesson:
“The children were so engaged and enthusiastic today. It’s wonderful to see them thinking like scientists and making connections between their learning and the world around them!”

To keep the learning alive at home, why not explore BBC Bitesize Year 4 Science? It’s full of videos and quizzes to help children revisit what soil is, the different types of soil, and why they matter:

Questions You Could Ask at Home

  • What is soil made of?
  • Can you name the different types of soil and where you might find them?
  • Why do you think sandy soil is good for some plants but not others?
  • What does a pedologist do, and why is their job important?
  • How do you think soil helps other careers like farming or building?
These questions are a great way to help children recall and embed their learning while making real-world connections.
