πŸ¦‰ Owls Take Learning Outdoors: Right Angles in Action!

Jan

πŸ”„ Turning, Twisting and Talking Maths in the Playground

This week, our Owls (Year 3) have been busy exploring right angles and directional language in a fun and practical way! Today, the children took their learning outdoors and worked in pairs to give clear instructions to help their partner move from one spot in the playground to another.
They used fantastic mathematical vocabulary such as:
  • Quarter turn / Half turn
  • Clockwise / Anticlockwise
  • Steps forward and backward
It was wonderful to see the children applying their classroom learning in a real-life context, showing great teamwork and communication skills.

Mrs Henderson shared:
“It’s amazing to see the children so engaged and confident using mathematical language. Taking learning outside really helps them understand how these concepts work in everyday life.”

Ideas for Follow-Up at Home

  • Play a β€œRobot Game” where your child gives you instructions to move around the room using turns and steps.
  • Go for a walk and ask your child to describe directions using quarter turns and clockwise/anticlockwise language.
  • Use toys or figures to create a mini obstacle course and practise giving clear instructions.

Questions Parents Can Ask

  • What does a quarter turn look like?
  • How do you know if you’re turning clockwise or anticlockwise?
  • Can you show me a right angle somewhere in our home?
