✨ Small Steps, Big Bravery: Exploring Courage Together in Our Worship
Our worship this half term focuses on the Christian value of Courage, inspired by Joshua 1:9:
“Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Children will be exploring what courage looks like in everyday life—stepping out of their comfort zone, doing the right thing (not the easy thing), facing challenges, overcoming fears, and encouraging others.
Ideas for Things to Do at Home
Create a Courage Acrostic
Write the word COURAGE down the side of a page and think of a phrase for each letter (e.g., C – Carry on when things are difficult). Display it somewhere visible.
Small Steps Challenge
Encourage your child to set a personal challenge—something new or tricky—and write the first small steps they can take. Celebrate progress together.
Rope of Courage
If possible, hang a piece of rope in a shared space at home. When someone needs courage, they can hold the rope and say a short prayer or affirmation.
Encouragement Stars
Cut out star shapes and write positive messages on them. Hide them around the house for family members to find and feel encouraged.
Hero Research
Explore stories of people who showed courage (e.g., Harriet Tubman, Ernest Shackleton). Talk about what made them brave.
Questions to Ask Your Child
Can you remember a time when you thought, “I’ve just got to keep trying”?
When did you last step outside your comfort zone to try something new?
Do you think courage means never feeling scared? Why or why not?
Who do you admire for showing courage? What did they do?
