🏞️ From Brown Signs to Big Smiles: Year 1’s Outdoor Learning

Today, our curious and enthusiastic Kingfishers Year 1 children stepped out into the heart of our beautiful Harrogate community for a local walk with a purpose – to explore and investigate the human and physical features of our area as part of their geography learning.
Armed with clipboards, pencils, and plenty of excitement, the children set off to observe and record what they could see, hear, and experience. From historic buildings and bustling shops to trees, parks, and natural landscapes, the walk was a wonderful opportunity to bring classroom learning to life.
Along the way, the children spotted brown tourist signs, which sparked fascinating conversations about the history and heritage of Harrogate. These signs became springboards for learning, helping the children make connections between the past and present of their local environment.
Back in class, the children used key vocabulary to label their drawings and discuss what they had seen. This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of geography but also encouraged them to ask questions, think critically, and appreciate the world around them.
To continue the learning at home, we recommend watching this engaging BBC Bitesize KS1 video on human and physical features:
At St Peter’s, we believe in taking learning beyond the classroom. This local walk was a perfect example of our school vision to Love, Learn, Shine – nurturing a love for learning, exploring the world with curiosity, and shining brightly in all we do.
